what did I even fill my time with
I am pretty sure I got my first smartphone (an android) back in 2011 or 2012 (my personal instagram has pictures from 2012, and that was when they added the android app).
Since I’ve deleted my social media apps off my phone, I’ve been wondering what I used to do pre-smartphone. I definitely used my laptop A LOT. It was just more dedicated computer time to use social media.
List of things I think I was doing:
- I was in college - so probably had IRL friend stuff
- DeviantArt still had a very active art community
- They also had that chatroom!
- I was drawing with a Wacom Graphire in DeviantART RP groups
- I joined AO3 in 2011, so I was probably spending a lot of time finding fic on livejournal/ffnet, active in livejournal communities.
- Also reading yaoi/bl/manga/etc we won’t forget that LOL.
- I was posting on livejournal and following my fandom fic friends.
- I had art friends that I was in MSN Messenger group chats with.
- I was on Twitter a lot with even more art friends
- I was using plurk with some other art friends
- Of course Tumblr!! Although I was not a fan of having an endless scroll on my timeline or any of my tumblr blogs. I was following art friends
^ notice how much of this was about my friends and art community LOL.
I don’t think I’m super nostalgic for old internet, but do miss how fun it was to find those communities to chat with.
Re: Phone -
Keeping social media use to computer time only is going okay. For me, it’s not Social Media Bad, but more annoyance at that trained urge to pick up your phone and check in on social media. Adding friction to that process helps a lot. It’s honestly still too early to tell.
Unrelated but we played the new keybound brawler on ffxiv last night, lol so fun. I did better than expected as I type fast but am not accurate. I think it’s so diabolical that phrases were not case sensitive, but some punctuation was required.
