blogging about blogs
I found this blogging question challenge from kalechip’s entry.
This is very lj/tumblr era questionaire (which I love!!)
Why did you start blogging in the first place?
I can’t remember if my first experience to blogging was xanga or livejournal (possibly xanga), but my earliest memory of having more consistent blog was my livejournal from 2005 when I was 14.
I used to just blog about my day and my internet friends - all the content was so cringe!! I actually logged into my old LJ (I should archive that offline but am a bit too lazy haha), and I used to be so emo and complain about my mom.
What platform are you using to manage your blog and why did you choose it?
Right I use Bludit which I think is a rec from Dirchansky or Wai. Ever since I discovered it I just use it as the CMS for all of my sites. I like that it is Flat-File and was easy to install, and has a few basic themes/plugins that makes a site functional for my needs. I also just love how lightweight it is.
Have you blogged on other platforms before?
On/off at various times, through LJ, tumblr, blogspot, self-hosted wordpress. I do feel super thankful that I was on the internet during the peak LJ era because I loved the communities that were built there.
A lot of my long-time internet friends were also from that era.
How do you write your posts?
Currently I wite in Scrivener which I purchased many years ago. It’s very chaotic/disorganized. There’s a feature to copy and paste using basic HTML which has made things simpler.
There’s 1000000% a better way to post, but I am very old school.
When do you feel most inspired to write?
Haha - usually when I’m supposed to be focused on something else. I had a vague idea in my head that I would be posting journal recaps and other little niche life hobby things. I’m trying to not be too precious with my blog posts but we will see.
Do you publish immediately after writing, or do you let it simmer a bit as a draft?
I post when I finish a draft, but those drafts could take a while to complete.
I don’t enjoy curating post or scheduling posts.
What's your favourite post on your blog?
I don’t have one but I’ve enjoyed reading my journal TL;DRs, lol they are a bit wordy but there’s something that I love about preserving that kind of relic!!
Any future plans for your blog?
No set plans, but I’m hoping to update a little more consistently and find more blogs to read.
This is so random, but recently I found Feedmail created by Kevin Cox which is a service that sends RSS updates to your email. I’ve been wanting to find a RSS reader for a while, and this one seems to fit my personal needs best. I am still on the “trial” (you are given 400 credits and each post uses up 1 credit), but the credit refill pricing is super reasonable, and I’m happy to pay for a service that isn’t trying to use my data for ads/etc.
I’m too lazy to get into it (and honestly not super well informed), but over the years I have been shifting more to a more intentional consumption of internet media (that I curate) vs an algorithm/feed that pushes content onto me.
TLDR I just want to see my friends post!
Why do you write?
You know, it’s funny, I sometimes ask myself “Why Blog?”
I already have an IRL journal. What’s the purpose of having an online blog too?
I don’t have plans to monetize any type of blogging or even try to drive traffic to this site. I guess my hope is to have a little corner of internet that someone could discover on a whim.
Anyways the answer is I don’t know. LOL.
