i luv stove top popcorn
When I moved into my first studio apartment 8 years ago, it didn’t have a microwave and I decided I would just live without it.
BUT, my one of my favorite salty snacks is popcorn (because I have been lucky to have pets who do not care for popcorn). So I learned how to make stove top popcorn.
And now I only make it that way. I once mentioned it to my coworkers and got hard roasted b/c of how bougie it sounded.
I've been thinking about this because I finally made a batch to share with my friends for our D&D session last night.
The recipe/method is easy:
- Measure kernels (I used to eyeball, but now I like making anywhere from 40g-65g at a time)
- Use a neutral high heat oil (I’m using Avocado oil these days). I also use a stainless steel pot and medium heat.
- Start w/ 3 kernels. Once all 3 kernels pop the oil is ready. Take the popcorn out.
- Pour the rest of the kernels in and take the stove off heat for 30 seconds-ish - this lets the kernels heat up evenly
- Put back on heat, open the lid a lil bit for the steam to escape. Once the first couple of pops happen I turn off the heat and occasionally shake the pot.
- Once there’s a couple of seconds between pops, I quickly put the popcorn in a large bigass stainless steel mixing bowl hehe. YOU NEED TO BE QUICK CUZ POPCORN CAN BURN FAST.
- Add toppings and enjoy!! (I haven’t tried making kettle corn or caramel corn yet but I usually like my popcorn savory).
Currently I am in a cheddar/cheese popcorn kick.

I tend to load up my popcorn so I like to eat it with a chopstick, yay.

I also went ahead and ordered a batch of mushroom popcorn kernels to try that out (big crunch!!).
I’ve used an air popper too (not so tasty) and someone gave me a microwave popcorn kettle thing (not useful lol). Stove top is just soooo easy. A whirley pop seems interesting too probably easier and better for large batches but I just feel like I need one yet.
(Y’all, I think I’m just ready for lunch lol.)
On a side note I just remembered that the other day Poppy fully stepped on my toasted bread.
