sewing crafts

I got a sewing machine sometime during the covid lockdown in 2020 because I wanted to make some masks to match my outfits. I never ended up making the masks (just sourced plain black ones instead) but sewing has always been an interest of mine and I had been dreaming of owning a sewing machine since I was a little girl. I used to hand sew very DIY clothes for my dolls LOL!! and also always loved doing arts and crafts at girl scouts summer camps and such.

ANYWAYS, here is a project that was about a year in the making because I only worked on it in spontaneous bursts.

I took a random embroidery workshop a couple years back and it made me want to do more DIY. So one afternoon in 2024 I stopped by Austin Creative Reuse to pick up supplies for ~$3. The hardest part of being in the store is to not over-buy things for crafts that I may or may not make. It’s so difficult!! As a side note, I made a rag quilt (my first quilt!!) out of fabric that I sourced from ACR. I saw some cross stitching kits I got curious about but stopped myself from buying…

I wanted to make tama patches that day! I didn’t have an end project in mind but just wanted to make them. I tried some different ways to fill in large areas with embroidery - so it’s not consistent. But the hand feel is so charmful.

After that the patches were filed away for over a year ha ha ha.

This past weekend I wanted to do some wardrobe refreshes for next month's trip to Otakon. I got new clothes too (I try to stick with 100% cotton/natural) but also had a strike of DIY inspiration. I’ve been seeing cropped button ups at the store so I thought that I could probably thrift a men’s button up and crop it myself for a oversized crop shirt. Then I remembered I have my tama patches and can add them to the right side of the shirt.

Yesterday I picked up a men's button up shirt for my afternoon craft to work on that afternoon/night. I'm pleased with how it turned out!!

I'm wearing the shirt today so it's a little bit wrinkled. My hem work could be better, but will do for now LOL. I may add more hand embroidered details later on. But I'm glad my tama patches can be worn!! We will see how this looks after it's been washed (maybe I will have to air dry).
